Oliver N. Schipper, MD

Dr. Schipper completed his medical education at the Georgetown University School of Medicine and attended the University of Chicago for orthopaedic surgery residency. He then completed his orthopaedic foot and ankle surgery training at the OrthoCarolina Foot & Ankle Institute. There he assisted in the care of professional athletes and performed a variety of orthopaedic foot and ankle procedures including primary and revision ankle replacements. He also managed all forms of foot and ankle trauma, including tibial, pilon, ankle, calcaneal, talus, and foot fractures.

He is a member of the American Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society (AOFAS) and an elected member of the Young Physicians Committee. He has presented both regionally and nationally, including the AOFAS and the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons annual conferences.

Dr. Schipper has co-authored book chapters and published multiple papers in orthopaedic foot and ankle surgery, with a focus on ankle replacement. He has produced the lead article in the top foot and ankle journal, Foot and Ankle International, multiple times. His work was the first to link early ankle replacement osteolysis to implant wear particles, for which he was a Leonard J. Goldner award finalist. He completed an Orthopaedic Research and Education Fund grant in collaboration with Rush University comparing ankle replacement implant wear between highly cross linked polyethylene and conventional ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene.

Outside of the management of ankle arthritis and ankle replacement, Dr. Schipper specializes in lower extremity trauma, foot and ankle sports medicine, including minimally invasive Achilles repair, complex deformity correction, and minimally invasive bunion correction. Dr. Schipper was the first to perform the minimally invasive bunion surgery (PECA/MICA bunionectomy) in the DC/Virginia area. He also performs minimally invasive hammertoe and lesser toe deformity correction as well as minimally invasive hindfoot reconstruction. Dr. Schipper teaches and lectures nationally on minimally invasive foot and ankle surgery.

Dr. Schipper believes in empowering patients to make the best decision for their life situation. No two patients are alike and therefore each management plan must be tailored to the expectations and needs of each individual patient.
